LAGRANGE PARK — Police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old resident who was struck by a freight train about 4:30 a.m. Sunday near Harding Avenue.

The man was identified as Thomas McCallister of 14 E. Harding Ave., who was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses told police he was a passenger with three others in a vehicle stopped on Harding with the crossing gate down at the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad.

McCallister then got out of the vehicle, entered the tracks and was struck by a northbound freight train, police said. Investigators continued to collect details Sunday night to determine why McAllister stepped onto the tracks.

An autopsy is pending by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Officer.
