Traffic light agreement moves forward at Lyons Township South Campus

LA GRANGE — The Lyons Township High School District 204 Board authorized an intergovernmental agreement Monday to construct and maintain the signal in front of the south campus in Western Springs.
Other partners in the venture are the villages of La Grange and Western Springs and the Park District of La Grange, which moved the entrance to Denning Park on the east side of Willow Springs to align with the school entrance.
“It’s been 20 years since this idea first surfaced and we tried to get a traffic light on Willow Springs Road in front of the south campus,” said board President Mark Pera.
“We went to the Illinois Department of Transportation on at least two occasions and were declined both times,” Pera said. “It’s just fantastic we got four government bodies directly involved, and we were able to push the boulder over the top of the mountain.”
Superintendent Tim Kilrea said school officials are grateful village officials secured grants totaling $330,000 to install the signal. LT’s share of the cost is $3,000 for a portion of a traffic study.
“The reason we qualified this time is we have to reroute our internal traffic pattern,” Kilrea said. “There will be expenditures on the summer project list for the rerouting.”
The superintendent said changes in LT’s internal traffic pattern won’t occur until the signal is installed in 2014, and an extensive effort to educate parents will be conducted.
A pedestrian-activated pedestrian signal with flashing lights also will be installed at Mason Drive to improve overall pedestrian safety in the area, Kilrea said.
