Miller challenges Discipio for LaGrange Park village president

LAGRANGE PARK — Village President Jim Discipio is facing a challenge from independent candidate Jay Miller, but other offices are uncontested in the April 9 election.
Miller ran unsuccessfully for trustee in 2009 and has been involved with the Rose Party, which formed in 2011 to contest candidates endorsed by the LaGrange Park Caucus.
Neither the caucus nor the Rose Party was able to field a full slate of candidates in time for the Dec. 26 deadline to file nominating petitions.
In October, the caucus slated Amanda Sidell for clerk over newcomer Emily Provost. Endorsements also went to Discipio in his bid for a third term and Mario Fotino, a Zoning Board of Appeals members, and Michael Sheehan, a Plan Commission member, for two of three four-year terms on the Village Board.
At the filing deadline, James Kucera filed the third four-year trustee term. Bob Lautner filed for a two-year trustee term to replace Susan Storcel, who resigned in November. Discipio appointed Krista Grimm to serve until the April election.
Miller said he intends to challenge Discipio’s policies on economic development, infrastructure and village leadership. Miller said he wasn’t disappointed about not being backed by the Rose Party, because they couldn’t field a complete slate.
“We’re all running as independents, and we’re not going to have the partisan politics we had last time,” Miller said. “Last time, it was like two separate camps with a lot of statements being misconstrued. Candidates now will be able to focus on the issues at hand.”
