La Grange Scouts race to the finish

LA GRANGE — More than 50 Cub Scouts from Ogden Avenue School raced their pinewood derby cars Jan. 26.
The grand championship match pitted the winners of grade-level races against one another featuring the gravity-powered wooden cars designed by first- through fifth-grade members of Pack 39, sponsored by the First Baptist Church of La Grange.
Third-grader Louis Finder of the Bears den claimed first place, followed by fifth-grader Henry Stark of the Webelos II den in second and fourth-grader Jackson Wolf of Webelos I in third.
Among the first-graders in the Tiger den, Sammy Finder finished first, followed by Aidan Fouilard and Nick Peterson.
For second-graders in the Wolf den, Calvin Wittleder claimed the top finish with Charlie Maine coming in second and Luke Cieniawski placing third.
For third-graders in the Bears den, Louie Finder finished first, Luke Caruso was second and Owen Cornell placed third.
In the Webelos I den, Jackson Wolf took first, Will Cieniawski placed second and Drew Ragaishis was third.
In the Webelos II den, Henry Stark came in first, Colin Schaufelberger was second and Alex Marovec took third.
Each den recognized the coolest car. The Most Awesome awards went to Nick Peterson, Will Cotts, Kyle Mora, Ethan Lesner and Matthew Sagols.
The pack also raised $115 in a bake sale to benefit the Sandy Hook Memorial Fund in memory of two Tiger scouts who were killed in the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting.
The pack’s Derby Café collected $250 through snack sales to donate to its chartering organization, the First Baptist Church, which will recognize the Scouts at its 11 a.m. service Feb. 3.
