Family Friendly: Get to know the world of piano
Families can see the inner-workings of a piano Sept. 29 during "The Piano in Pieces."

The piano is a mystery to many people — even if they play it all the time. People who play violins or guitars “intimately know every inch of that instrument,” said Diane Duncan, sales manager for Steinway Piano Gallery in Hinsdale. “A pianist sits down and plays and doesn’t worry about what’s going on inside.”
Duncan will clear up that mystery when she presents The Piano in Pieces, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at Thomas Ford Memorial Library, 800 Chestnut St., Western Springs. A baby grand piano will be used for the demonstration.
“We’re not taking the entire piano apart,” Duncan said. “We’re showing parts that are typically hidden.”
Kids are usually wowed by the demonstration, Duncan said, while parents begin to realize why a piano costs as much as it does. “It takes a lot of work and a lot of skill to put together a wonderful piano,” Duncan explained.

Clowns, acrobats and elephants are coming to Sandburg Middle School, 345 E. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst with the Kelly Miller Circus, 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21. The circus features a cast of international performers. Admission is $14 for adults, $8 for ages 2-11 in advance and $16 and $10 at the door.

It’s easy being green
Education and motivation are the goals for the free family-oriented Cantigny Green Fair, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Parade Field, 1s151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Kids can participate in eco-activities. There will be a farmers market, cooking demos, music, recycled art contest and fashion show. Recyclables will be accepted. Parking is $5 per vehicle.

Safety first
Preschoolers will learn what to do during a fire from firemen at “Stop, Drop and Roll!,” 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 24 at La Grange Public Library, 10 W. Cossitt Ave. Afterward the kids will climb aboard a fire truck. Registration ends Sept. 21.
