Samples are expected to be analyzed in the next month to see the extent of repairs needed on the wooden floor of the Lyons Township High School fieldhouse at the north campus in La Grange.
The School Board heard an update Feb. 21 on the floor problem which surfaced in December and could knock out basketball camps and other uses during the summer between graduation and the start of classes in the fall.
“There are a limited number of locations where the floor is moderately spongy,” said David Sellers, business manager. “There’s a little bit of give to the floor.”
Water damage is suspected to be the cause of the problem. The defect isn’t considered a hazard that would cause students to trip or slip on the floor, which is 12 years old, Sellers said.
Flooring experts are scheduled to drill into the floor March 1 for a core sample and conduct an analysis with experts from the district’s insurance company.
“There’s still a lot of uncertainty,” Sellers said concerning the extent of the damage and the scope of repairs, including sanding and reapplication of a protective coating of urethane.
In the event the floor needs to be closed all or part of the summer, school officials are investigating alternative locations for summer programs. Summer program registration begins Feb. 27.
