Among other business Feb. 21, board members:
accepted a recommendation against LT applying for part of the federal Race to the Top grant, which would amount to $20,000 of the $42 million awarded to Illinois schools. LT would have to spend more than the award to comply with the requirements for the grant, officials said.
heard a report on two new summer program offerings, which are a marching band camp for middle school students and Science Olympiad camp for seventh- through 11th-graders.
approved changes to the 2012-13 school calendar, including a full day the first day of classes Aug. 20, now required by state law; previously students had a half day the first day of class. The board also made Jan. 7 a teacher institute day for staff development instead of Jan. 18. Students will return to class Jan. 8. Late start days, when students report at 8:45 a.m. instead of at 7:45 a.m., will be held every two weeks, resulting in an increase of three late-start days from this school year. The last class day is May 30 and graduation will be on June 2, 2013.
