LA GRANGE — Maureen Nosek hopes her change in careers will help women transform their lives.

Last month, Nosek opened the doors of Get in Shape for Women fitness studio in downtown La Grange — almost a year after she was laid off from a job in pharmaceutical sales. It’s the first location in Illinois for the franchised operation based in Needham, Mass.

Nosek, of La Grange, learned about Get in Shape for Women in January after reading a magazine article. She spent 15 years in pharmaceutical sales, but was laid off last November. Unemployment, she said, gave her some time to reflect about what she wanted to do. She was intrigued on how the franchise had grown, and is passionate about fitness, so she got in contact with New England based-company. After talking it over with her husband, Evan, who owns DuPage Auto Bath, she found a lot of positives in owning a studio.

“We’re, like, let’s do this,” she said.

While there are women-only gyms, Nosek said this program is unique in that it has a workout that includes strength training and cardio exercises and a nutrition and holds clients accountable for their goals they set for weight loss. No more than four women are working out at time with a personal trainer.

Jennifer Schnell likes working one-on-one with a trainer, something she said other places don’t offer.

“The personal attention and coaching they give to you makes a huge difference,” Schnell said.

Nosek’s staff is small, just herself and two personal trainers.

One of those trainers, Nick Morgan, who has been involved in fitness his entire life, said he liked the approach the company had, especially the nutrition and accountability components. Morgan learned of Nosek’s studio after seeing an ad looking for personal trainer. The more he learned about the program, the more he liked it.

“I became more and more interested in it,” Morgan said. “I liked the philosophy behind it.”

His job is to motivate the clients and encourage his clients to do more than they can during workouts.

Client Rachel Jumpa of Western Springs has been with the fitness studio for about a month. The experience has been great, she said, and work outs are convenient, because she is done in about an hour.

“I visually see changes in my body, gaining muscle, and I feel better about myself,” Jumpa said.

For now, Nosek is enjoying making a positive impact on her clients’ well-being.

“It’s exciting to watch that little bit of transformation going on,” Nosek said.
