LA GRANGE — An elderly couple killed in a fire in their home early Saturday have been identified.

The cause of death for Ronald Martin, 90, and his wife, Eleanor, 91, hasn’t been confirmed, pending results of a fire investigation, said Tony Brucci, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fire Chief Bill Bryzgalski said firefighters found Eleanor Martin in critical condition soon after responding at 1:38 a.m. to reports of flames and heavy smoke on the front half of the one-and-a-half story house at 901 S. Kensington.

She was taken to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, where she died at 5 a.m.

Crews continued searching the home and found a second resident on the first floor, later identified as Ronald Martin, who already had died.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is assisting the investigation, and the cause remains undetermined, Bryzgalski said.
