With cold weather finally coming to town, Chicago’s less fortunate will stay a bit warmer this winter thanks in large part to the generous customers of Floyd’s 99 in La Grange.
“Our front office is full of coats. My own office is full of coats. And people are still bringing them in,” says Michelle Zaper, shop manager in La Grange. “I’m running out of places to put them.”
While Floyd’s began their coat drive three years ago at other locations in Chicago, last year was the first for La Grange. The local shop offered half priced haircuts to encourage participation. This year no incentive was necessary.
“People were asking about the drive before the banners even went up,” says Pete Vercellin, Floyd’s operations manager in Chicago, who plans to give the huge collection of hats, gloves and coats for men women and children to the Franciscan Outreach this week. “The generosity in La Grange is amazing.”
Floyd’s idea to start a local coat drive also seems to be catching on with other organizers.
“Last year we were the only ones I know that were collecting winter gear,” Zaper said. “This year, a number of our customers said they had also given to another local coat drive as well.”
That’s fine with Zaper, Vercellin and the rest of the crew at Floyd’s who just want people to stay warm.
“The more the merrier when it comes to helping the less fortunate,” Zaper said. “Kindness and generosity helps pull the community closer together. All of us here at Floyd’s love the idea.”
Floyd’s La Grange shop is located at 71 S. La Grange Road.~.
