LA GRANGE — Park District of La Grange Board member Tim Kelpsas has withdrawn a challenge to the nominating petition of Park Board hopeful John Brom for the April 9 election.
Kelpsas, who isn’t seeking re-election, filed an objection Jan. 3 that Brom had fewer than the minimum number of signatures required.
“I was led to believe 42 signatures were needed, and then I was later informed by the park district 42 was not the minimum,” Kelpsas said.
Brom had 40 signatures.
“Because Mr. Brom had enough signatures there must be enough community support for him to be on the ballot, so I withdrew my objection,” he said of his letter Jan. 10.
Kelpsas said he filed a Freedom of Information request to view the nominating petitions of Brom, Robert Lynch, James Boo and incumbents Robert Ashby and Chris Walsh. Three candidates will be elected to four-year terms.
When he discovered Brom had only 40 signatures, Kelpsa said he filed an objection.
“My concern as a citizen of La Grange is the age old requirement a potential candidate must have enough people believe in that candidate to be put on the ballot at all,” Kelpsas said.
Kelpsas said he collected twice as many signatures needed in order to run for the La Grange Public Library Board in April, though he couldn’t recall the exact number.
