La Grange skaters celebrate the deep freeze

LA GRANGE — Hockey and figure skating fans have waited nearly two years for a solid freeze, after a tease earlier in January resulting in only one day of skating before temperatures rose and forced the closing of the park’s two rinks on Gilbert Avenue south of 41st Street.
Mild temperatures precluded the rinks from being flooded all last winter.
Jack Rudzinski, 14, of La Grange, said he played hockey indoors last winter when the weather didn’t cooperate, but it wasn’t his first choice.
“It’s not the same indoors,” Jack said. “It’s so much better out here. These are the best days.”
Serter Kural of La Grange stood wearing gym shoes just outside the rink with a hockey stick sending a puck back to his 6-year-old son, Adam, who wore a helmet and whizzed around the ice.
“I don’t skate, but I like to help him play,” Kural explained. “We’re having fun.”
