Potters craft bowls to fight hunger

LA GRANGE — Pins or alleys weren’t required for a weekend fundraising Bowl-a-thon.
The Village Potters sponsored a day of sculpting and throwing Saturday for the Empty Bowls project, which raises funds for area food pantries and awareness about hunger and poverty.
Organizer and potter Curt Hansman said a second Bowl-a-thon is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10, when area volunteers are invited to unleash their creativity.
Pottery will be sold at the Empty Bowls event May 9, and buyers can take their bowls around to tables of participating vendors and community groups for snacks and samples at the Village Market Shopping Center on La Grange Road. The event, from 5:30-8 p.m., also serves to introduce residents to local businesses and community groups.
Hansman said sponsoring potters wanted to move the event’s date to May to take advantage of warmer evening weather. The 2012 April event raised more than $6,400, which was donated to four area food pantries.
