St. Cletus School welcomed Miss Illinois as the guest of honor to lead the homecoming parade Sept. 18 from the La Grange grade school to two football games at Lyons Township High School’s Bennett Field in Western Springs.
Hannah Smith of Huntley wore her crown and waved from a convertible with members of St. Cletus’s homecoming court, fifth-grader Ava Riccione, sixth-grader Patrick Kane, seventh-grader Amy Fatora and eighth-grader Jonathan Levitske. The four students were selected after their names were drawn from a hat.
“The kids have a blast during that three-minute ride in the parade to Bennet Field,” said homecoming organizer and eighth-grade parent Gina McAndrew. “But the funnest part is that hour before the parade when they decorate cars and eat doughnuts with milk or juice. They take a lot of pictures and socialize.”
In between junior varsity and varsity football games against St. Michael’s School in Wheaton, parents of eighth-grade football players and cheerleaders looked forward to a special moment of recognition on the field, when they are introduced, and moms receive a mum corsage, McAndrew said.
