Sunshine, mild temperatures and plenty of snow greeted Cub Scouts from Western Springs and the La Grange area on the prowl for winter fun and games Jan. 14 at the Bemis Woods Forest Preserve.
The Voyager Trace District of the Des Plaines Valley Council of Boy Scouts hosted the popular Polar Prowl, which drew more than 50 scouts from the western suburbs.
“It’s basically an exercise in creativity,” explained organizer Richard Welge of LaGrange Highlands. “We give parents and kids a few props and they go out and have a good time.”
Participants were asked to bring sleds and similar snow devices. Leaders also planned to use a large canoe as a sled and organize games involving snowballs and a snowy tug of war, Welge said.
“We also set up a shelter wrapped in plastic along the sides, where we’d serve soup and hot chocolate,” he said. “Everyone brings a can of non-creamy soup, and we pour it in a pot and get an odd stew going. It’s all part of the family fun.”
