Princess Dempsey said wasteful spending and mismanagement have been going on far too long in the 7th District and she believes she’s the right person to clean it up.
Her priorities, if elected, would be tax relief, education and bringing businesses back to the district.
Dempsey, 44, lives in Broadview and ran for the state representative seat in 2010, but lost. She said she has learned a lot from the experience.
She is not in favor of raising taxes.
“Illinois has spent money that they shouldn’t have,” she said “We’ve (state) been undermanaged. We need a better system.”
“Every time we have a problem we raise taxes,” she said.
She believes the state should first go after the businesses they’ve helped financially and make sure they come back with something beneficial for the state or return what the state’s investment. “It takes legislation and a strong legislator like myself to make that happen,” she said.
Some industries, she said, haven’t been taxed enough.
“There is no entertainment taxes, on movies and gambling,” she said. “We’re taxing everything else as a taxing body but we won’t touch that. We need to take a look at that.”
As a business owner and former president of Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce she said she knows how to get businesses into the district and what they are looking for.
She favors making sure the state’s employee pension is funded. “Don’t touch that pension,” she said. “People have worked all of their lives for that pension.”
Dempsey is a member of Lindop School Board in Broadview and has helped to bring an Apple computer lab to the school through a grant. She wants to make sure all school districts have such opportunities open to them.
“Why don’t we go and hold the lottery to what they stated the money would be used for, schools,” she said. “I have not seen a dime yet.”
“I’m an advocate for change and I’ve been doing the work,” she said.
A resident for 30 years, Dempsey is a graduate of Proviso West High School. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from University of Phoenix and is working on her master’s degree in business administration. She is an ordained minister and has three sons.
