Lyons Township staff member learns on Southeast Asian island

LA GRANGE — Lyons Township High School staff member Michelle Wrona of Darien will study primate conservation strategies on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo. Wrona was selected to participate in summer 2013 global graduate studies as part of Miami University and Project Dragonfly’s Earth Expeditions Program. The graduate courses from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly are based on Earth Expeditions, which has engaged more than 1,400 people since 2004 in firsthand educational and scientific research at key conservation sites in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas. Ten members of the Lyons Township High School Business Professionals of America recently competed in the annual National BPA Leadership Conference contests and performed in a variety of categories, including Administrative Support Team, Advanced Office Systems and Procedures, Banking and Finance, Database Applications, Digital Media Production, Fundamentals of Web Design and Small Business Management Team. LA GRANGE — Vomit, snot and monsters aren’t the usual themes for waxing poetic. But fourth-graders at Ogden Avenue School embraced the freedom to flex their creativity this month at a workshop conducted by guest poet and facilitator Bill Buczinsky. Like a pied piper, Buczinsky captivated students and adult observers alike with his stream of rhythmic, rhyming words to frame poetic possibilities, teach meter and bring out the best in budding poets. “All power to the poet. LA GRANGE — A dispute between two school boards over financial control continues to fester. A legislative solution still isn’t in sight, state Rep. Jim Durkin reported May 20 to the Lyons Township High School Board in its effort to separate from the Lyons Township School Treasurer’s Office. Lyons Township High School office of community relations administrative assistant Sally Kapso recently received an Award of Excellence from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association’s Distinguished Service Awards. College of DuPage officials look at budget with $2.5 million deficit

The College of DuPage Board got its first look at the proposed 2014 budget May 16. While the college’s financial rating is good, challenges loom in the immediate future, challenges that may lead to an increase in tuition. At the core of the college’s potential problems is the failure of the state of Illinois to deliver on funding education, college officials said. “The state continues to be a significant challenge to the college,” said Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of finance and administration. Eight members of the Lyons Township High School Tabulae yearbook staff recently attended the annual spring convention of the National Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Association in San Francisco. Alana McCloskey took a superior rating for her copy and captions for sports. Erik Grosskopf won honorable mention for sports photography, Mia Volpe took honorable mention for student life copy and Sara Patel took honorable mention for copy on clubs. LAGRANGE PARK More than 300 students dressed their best for Nazareth Academy High School’s prom May 11 at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. LAGRANGE PARK — Nazareth Academy physics teacher Roberta Zasadzinski, sees an opportunity to deepen her students’ learning through the school’s pillar of service. After attending a week-long engineering workshop in 2012, Zasadzinski brought Engineering Projects in Community Service to Nazareth, the first suburban school to participate in the program.
