Lyons Township junior Matt Harris had a successful meet at the Oak Park-River Forest Class 3A Sectional on May 17, winning two individual events. Harris won the long jump with a jump of 23 feet, 8 3/4 inches and the 110 high hurdles in 14.94 seconds. Harris owns the state’s top sectional distance in the long jump. Last year’s state champion won with a jump of 23-8. The Lyons Township boys water polo team capped a successful season by winning the state title Saturday, 14-6, over Loyola Academy on Saturday. The Lions jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and never trailed after that. They led 6-3 at the half and 10-4 after three quarters. Joe Shannon led the Lions with six goals, while Josh Hirt had three goals and one assist; Peter Dore had two goals and two assists; and Sean McMahon had a goal. Lyons Township freshman Emma Haugen had a successful first trip to the state meet by winning the IHSA Class 3A high jump title with a jump of 5 feet, 7 inches. Omo Tseumah of Huntley was second (5-6) and Jaclyn Aremka of Plainfield North was third (5-6). Lisa Gordon finished fourth in the 1600-meter run, finishing in 4 minutes, 55.99 seconds. It truly was a game of inches and Trinity used that to its advantage to grind out a 3-0 victory over host Nazareth Academy Tuesday and halt a two-game skid. During a promising season last year, Nazareth soccer coach John Nikchevich and standout defender Tricia Masterson were not able to contribute as much as they planned. Nikchevich spent time in the hospital after having open-heart surgery during the season, while Masterson was recovering from a torn anterior cruicate ligament suffered early on. Those difficult circumstances only made the Roadrunners’ historic accomplishment even more meaningful May 9. Lyons Township’s girls water polo team headed into the York Sectional last week as the top seed, ahead of defending state champion Fenwick, looking for the program’s second state championship. A forfeit win over Clark and a 16-7 win over Oak Park-River Forest gave the Lions a shot at Fenwick in Saturday’s finals. LT beat the Friars handily during the season. Unfortunately for the Lions, they came up just short of earning that state tournament berth.
