Glenbard West won the battle for second place in the West Suburban Silver Saturday night and set up the showdown for first place on Feb. 1.
Michael Mache scored a game-high 15 points and Jeff Levesque added 12 points as the Hilltoppers gained sole possession of second place in the conference with a 60-36 victory over Lyons Township in Glen Ellyn.
In a back-and-forth game, Glenbard West scored 30 points in the fourth quarter to bring LT’s six-game winning streak to a crashing halt. The Lions (8-10, 4-3) did not make a basket in the second quarter and had only two field goals in the fourth quarter. The Hilltoppers (13-3, 5-2) recovered after LT outscored Glenbard 21-12 in the third quarter as the Hilltoppers led 30-28 going into the fourth.
“It was great. We have second place in the conference now,” Mache said. “They are a very good team.”
Glenbard West plays at conference-leading Oak Park-River Forest (12-4, 5-1) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in a game that was postponed by the Jan. 20 snowstorm. The two teams meet again Feb. 17 in Glen Ellyn.
LT suffered its first loss since a 72-57 defeat to St. Francis Dec. 29 in York’s Tosh Holiday Classic. The Lions entered the game with seven wins in their last nine games.
David Reed led LT with 10 points, including two three-pointers. Glenbard outscored LT 7-1 in the second quarter, but the Lions scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to tie the game at 18-18. LT’s only lead was 22-21 with 3:51 to go in the third on Chris Antalek’s layup.
“Our ballhandling and decision making was not good enough to win the game tonight,” LT coach Tom Sloan said. “This game was not indicative of how we’ve played our last 10 games.”
The score was only 18-7 for Glenbard West at halftime. The Lions only point in the second quarter came on Chris O’Reilly’s free throw early in the quarter and then the Hilltoppers ended the period with seven points.
“Their zone was really packed in,” Mache said. “Sometimes we have a bad habit that when teams pack it in, we throw the ball away. We are not patient.”
The Hilltoppers took command with a 9-2 run to open the fourth quarter, which included a dunk from the baseline by 6-foot-8 Pat Mazza. The game ended with a pair of three-pointers by Glenbard West reserve Niketas Sorensen.
